Corn Roast August 23

The Stittsville Corn Fest Market buzzed with an energy as warm and comforting as the roasted corn wafting through the air. Families meandered, children giggled, their faces painted with the promise of afternoon delights. A magician, with a flourish of sequined cape, made numerous ballon animals to give to the children, eliciting shrieks of delight from the younger crowd. Later, the melodic strumming of a lone pianist filled the air, a gentle counterpoint to the cheerful din. Delicious corn, impossibly sweet and perfectly charred, was the undisputed star, but the supporting cast of fine vendors offered everything from handcrafted jewelry to delicious baked treats. Amidst this tapestry of community celebration, two sights truly anchored my experience. The first was a canine, a mixed Shepherd breed sporting a custom-made yellow cotton hat perched on his head.

The second, however, presented a delightful, albeit persistent, challenge. A woman, whose name I never quite caught but whose determined gaze remained etched in my memory, fixated on the small, unassuming Christmas cactus I’d brought along. This wasn’t just any cactus; it was my cherished plant that I grew from a single cutting. I use it to display my vibrant glass plant stakes. She was, to put it mildly, relentless, her pleas for ownership escalating from polite inquiries to near-evangelical pronouncements of how much my cactus would “blossom” under her care. My polite refusals, each one met with a renewed surge of persuasive charm, became a humorous dance, a silent negotiation unfolding amidst the corn-scented revelry.

Yet, it was the earnest dedication of a young man, a veritable titan of goodwill, that truly rounded out the day. Sweltering under the afternoon sun, he had willingly donned a full, plastic corn costume, his cheerful waves and enthusiastic greetings a testament to his commitment to the spirit of Corn Fest. He was a beacon of unadulterated joy, a testament to the simple, heartwarming pleasures that make events like these so special. As the sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the market, I departed, clutching my plant-stack-laden cactus a little tighter, a smile still playing on my lips, a delightful blend of Barnaby’s hat, the tenacious cactus enthusiast, and the valiant corn-costumed champion imprinted on my memory.
